The State of Education in Latin America and the Caribbean 2023

Submitted by SPH DIGITAL on

Education and skill accumulation are fundamental for overcoming structural inequalities, improving social mobility, and boosting productivity. However, educational systems in Latin America and the Caribbean face significant challenges, such as high dropout rates, low completion levels, and deficiencies in the quality of learning. This situation is exacerbated by high inequality in access, quality, and completion, particularly affecting low-income students, rural areas, and racial and ethnic minorities.

Migrant wages and remittances to Latin America and the Caribbean in 2023

Submitted by SPH DIGITAL on

In 2023, the remittances received by the countries of Latin America and the Caribbean reached 154,511 million dollars. This value is slightly lower (0.9%) than what we had predicted in our annual projection. The difference is largely due to lower-than-expected growth in the total wage bill of migrant workers in the United States during the final months of 2023.

Matching Patterns among Same-Sex and Different-Sex Couples in Latin America

Submitted by SPH DIGITAL on

Using microdata from the censuses of eight countries in Latin America (Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Guatemala, Mexico, Peru, and Uruguay), this paper describes matching patterns by age, ethnicity, and education among same-sex and different-sex couples. It shows that same-sex couples are more diverse than different-sex couples in terms of age, ethnicity, and education, although for ethnicity and education the differences are not large or statistically significant in all countries.

Seeing Is Believing: Screening Anemia to Make Risks Salient Experimental Evidence from El Salvador

Submitted by SPH DIGITAL on

We investigate the impact of non-invasive anemia screening on treatment adherence in El Salvador. Anemia is a common childhood condition in low-income countries, due mainly to iron-deficiency, which if left untreated during critical development periods can have lasting health consequences. While effective treatments exist, adherence to treatment is often challenging, since the symptoms of mild to moderate anemia such as lack of energy or paleness can be easily overlooked.

Enhancing Maternal and Infant Healthcare in Remote Villages: Experimental Evidence on the Efficacy of Demandand Supply-Side Subsidies

Submitted by SPH DIGITAL on

This paper investigates the effects of releasing remoteness constraints on the accessibility and quality of maternal and infant healthcare. Through a field experiment, we provided complementary demand- and supply-side subsidies to improve healthcare for impoverished pregnant women residing in remote Nicaraguan communities. The subsidies increased the utilization of antenatal care by skilled providers, the quality of care received, institutional delivery, and postnatal care utilization, along with the quality of postnatal care received by mothers.
