What are the champion's specialties or areas of expertise?
Maria Fernanda is a medical surgeon. She graduated from the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM), with a master's degree in Center Management and Health Services from the University of Barcelona. She also holds an MBA in the United States, and a degree in telehealth. She is interested in the digital tools associated with telehealth and its implementation, such as artificial intelligence, natural language processing, machine learning and electronic clinical record. She has an interdisciplinary profile, with a keen interest in innovation in medical technologies that are leaving behind established precepts of care with the ability to think above conventionalities and great concern to minimize paradigms around the provision of medical and health services. She is a former Medical Director of 1DOC3 in Mexico. She currently works as a Healthcare Functional Consultant at Common Management Solutions.
What are the champion's achievements in digital health?
Maria Fernanda was a panelist at the plenary session of the UNFPA Regional Population and Development Meeting, held in Puebla, Mexico, 2019. She talked about the benefits of digital health. She received multiple invitations to face-to-face and virtual events in venues such as the National Autonomous University of Mexico, or for example to Bayer, Essity, Mexico It can, among others.
Why is the champion passionate about digital health (how did the champion become interested in digital health)?
As Maria Fernanda studied medicine, she realized that although technology was actually in the palm of our hands, technology is taught with a past-based approach. She is confident that she will be able to alleviate the burdens of health systems through distance care and the right education of the patient to know their advantages through this technology. Also, she believes that this could really help access to health in low income populations and improve their health and that of entire countries.
How can we attract more women to work on digital health?
Maria Fernanda believes in the importance of making calls, projects, forums, panels and proposals that are made by and for women more visible.
