IDB’s Commitment to Women Empowerment

Every year, International Women’s Day is a moment to celebrate the contributions and achievements of women and take stock of how far women have come in the fight for gender equality and inclusion in Latin America and the Caribbean, and around the world.

This occasion also reminds us how much more work we have to do in order to create the conditions so women can recover from the impact of COVID-19, sustain progress, and keep moving forward.

IDB Committed to Improving Lives of Latin American Children and Mothers

COVID-19 has exposed the heavy burden on female heads of household or women responsible for caring for children or other family members. One of the main obstacles continuing to impede women’s access to labor markets is the cultural expectation on their role as caregivers. In Latin America and the Caribbean, as in other regions of the world, the work of caring for and raising children falls mainly to women.

Man-Box: Men and Masculinity in Jamaica

The findings of the Man Box Jamaica study highlight that the Man Boxa set of socially reinforced rules about what “real men” should dois alive and well in Jamaica. Being inside the Man Box causes young men and others around them real harm, specifically in terms of violence and mental health. Men who live inside the Man Box appear to feel significantly less in control of their livesin terms of both everyday activities and larger life decisions. Not expressing emotions and being self-reliant are core elements of the Man Boxs pillars of perceived self-sufficiency and toughness.

COVID-19: An opportunity to transform female employment

We started 2021 with social networks alerting us that the employment crisis was affecting mainly women. For example, a news item from the United States indicated that all 140,000 jobs lost during December 2020 were for women. Furthermore, the news reported that the only ones who had recovered jobs during that month had been men.

As users of forest products and guardians of traditional knowledge, women have always been involved in forestry. Nevertheless, their access to forest resources and benefits and participation in forest management is limited compared to mens despite the fact that trees are more important to women, who depend on them for their families food security, income generation and cooking fuel.

Remote Delivery of Parenting Programs during the COVID-19 Pandemic

The COVID-19 pandemic led to the suspension of parenting programs through home visits and group meetings in many low- and middle-income countries. The detrimental impact from the lack of these services for children’s development and parents’ well-being was highlighted early in the pandemic and several innovations were developed to find ways to continue reaching families in countries across Latin America and the Caribbean.
