We are pleased to present the report Migration Flows in Latin America and the Caribbean, which provides the most comprehensive analysis of the residence permits issued by countries of the region over the five years between 2015 and 2019.

This paper analyzes how slum upgrading programs impact elementary school childrens attendance in Uruguay. We take advantage of the eligibility rule that deems slums eligible for a SUP program if they have 40 or more dwelling units. Using a fuzzy regression discontinuity estimator, we find that students exposed to SUPs are 17 percent less likely to be at the 90th percentile of the yearly count of school absences. That effect appears to be driven by how SUPs impact girls. These interventions have effects that last for more than five years after their implementation.

The COVID-19 crisis has generated mental health problems among previously healthy people and has exacerbated those problems among people with existing conditions. This challenge is not new for Latin America and the Caribbean, where mental health disorders are one of the five main causes of disability-adjusted life years (DALYs).

The crisis in Venezuela has generated the second largest displacement of people after the one in Syria and is receiving far less international attention and resources. At the same time, there is a large and growing population of Haitians that have migrated to South America, and large numbers are moving from the Northern Triangle of Central America into Mexico and towards the United States, and from Nicaragua into Costa Rica.

Two weeks ago, we shared part I of this two-part series and described the findings of our study. We looked back at three overarching findings from the first year of the RAPID-EC national survey, which includes 10,707 families across all 50 states of the United States. The three findings focused on material hardships, racial inequalities, and households with children with disabilities.
