Over the past two years the Migration Unit of the IADB, in collaboration with the OECD Migration Division, compiled and analyzed a new database of residence permits issued in the countries of Latin America and the Caribbean over the period 2015-2019.
When representatives from Latin America and the Caribbean get together for a dialogue around the present and future of areas as important as health, social protection, and early childhood development, the result is an unending stream of ideas, exchanges, and synergies. Paths open; paths which, beyond showing the shared needs and shortcomings, lead to lessons and innovations that may be adapted to each context.

The population of Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC) is aging and more and more older people will need care and support. At the same time, the supply of care is decreasing. The vast majority of care is provided by women, who experience the negative impact of care on their physical and mental health, and have fewer opportunities to enter the labor market.
The teacher enters the classroom, and the bustle turns to silence. Exams are placed on each desk. The teacher walks to the front, points to the clock above the blackboard and says in a firm voice: “You have exactly 90 minutes to finish the test. Get started.” We feel the pressure, take a deep breath, and become aware that there is no time to lose. That’s the power of the countdown, which gives us a sense of urgency and focus to perform our best in a limited amount of time.

This paper studies the impact of online technical education offered to complement regular academic instruction in high school on student schooling outcomes. Using a regression discontinuity design with an oversubscribed large-scale online technical course in Brazil, we find that students who score above the cutoff on the online technical education admission exam are less likely to drop out of high school, while their performance on standardized tests in math and Portuguese is similar to that of students just below the admission exam cutoff.
