The Inter-American Development Bank and New York University’s GovLab have convened ministries of health from four countries, including Argentina, Colombia, Panama and the City of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, for a pilot initiative to quickly generate responses to the Zika epidemic in the Latin American and Caribbean Region. This collaboration, known as “Smarter Crowdsourcing for Zika” convened over 100 subject-matter experts and public health practitioners from around the world via online conferences to discuss viable areas for preventing and responding to mosquito-borne diseases (MBDs).

Not only do we observe that employment has grown considerably in the last four decades, but that jobs in education and health are good quality jobs -especially for women-. In addition, the study projects the number of teachers, doctors and nurses that the countries of the region will need in the coming years.

Not every emerging technology will alter the social landscape, but some truly do have the potential to disrupt the statu quo and change the way people live.

Recent years have seen an ever-greater expansion of the digital economy, a development that may bring new opportunities to workers who were at a disadvantage in the traditional economy. We focus on a specific set of workers who belong to such a group: women. We study a skill set of particular relevance in the digital economy and estimate their returns in the labor market, according to gender, across four Latin American countries.

This Data relates to the Quality Report on the Salud Mesoamérica (SM2015)-Belize Facility Survey that was produced in agreement with the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB). All analyses and report writing were performed by the Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation (IHME) at the University of Washington. This report is meant as descriptive analysis to explore the most significant aspects of the information gathered for Salud Mesoamérica 2015. Its purpose is to ensure that collected data is of the highest possible quality.
