Implementation of artificial intelligence to improve diabetic retinopathy care in the State of Jalisco, Mexico

This paper presents a case study of a pilot project in the state of Jalisco that used artificial intelligence (AI) to screen for Diabetic Retinopathy. The result was the RETINA-IA project, which included an active call for potential patients; the taking of retinal photographs in three selected clinics and their interpretation using deep learning AI technology; coordination with a team from the Medical College of Ophthalmologists of Jalisco to verify the pre-diagnosis made by the AI; and the referral of patients who required it to an appointment with a specialist. With the use of AI, it was possible to pre-diagnose and refer patients in 1 to 2 days. In addition, the algorithm performed well in terms of correct classification of each level of retinopathy.
