fAIr LAC: Ethical and responsible adoption of artificial intelligence in Latin America and the Caribbean

Artificial intelligence (AI) offers unique opportunities to promote equal opportunities and improve the quality of life of all people in the region. Beyond the technological possibilities, its responsible and personalized use is essential and poses great challenges.

The Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) advocates building a common understanding of what AI is, its opportunities and its applications, but also its risks and possible measures to mitigate them. To this end, the IDB, in collaboration with partners and strategic allies, leads an initiative called fAIr LAC through which it seeks to promote the responsible adoption of AI to improve the provision of social services (mainly in the education, health, social protection, labor markets and issues associated with gender and diversity) and create development opportunities in order to reduce the gaps and mitigate the growing social inequality. Working together with the public and private sectors, civil society and academia, the fAIr LAC initiative will lead the execution of experiments and pilot projects of AI systems. Likewise, it will create models of ethical evaluation and other tools so that governments, entrepreneurs and civil society can deepen their knowledge in the matter and have guides and frameworks for the responsible adoption of AI in order to influence both public policy as in the entrepreneurial ecosystem.

This document describes some of the challenges and opportunities that AI presents to society, along with the lines of action that the fAIr LAC initiative proposes for Latin America and the Caribbean.
