Can technology help to improve the quality of education?

This is the question that led us at the Inter-American Development Bank to produce a report on currently available knowledge on assessments and experiences in this subject around the world.  (Escuelas y Computadores: por qué los gobiernos deben hacer su tarea, Berlinski, Busso, Cristia y Severin. ¿Pueden las tecnologías contribuir a mejorar la calidad de la educación? Esta es la pregunta que nos guió en el Banco Interamericano de Desarrollo para trabajar en un informe que describiera el conocimiento disponible de evaluaciones y experiencias en el mundo. Teachers typically spend 80-90 percent of their time in class to teach the lesson. The lesson must be the same for all the students. Both the good and the bad students are taught the same content and are expected to learn the same. Students do their homework at home, where they must carry out the assignment without the guidance of a teacher.

Wouldn’t it be better to do the lesson at home and the homework in class? I think so!

El típico maestro utiliza entre 80 y 90 por ciento de su tiempo en clase para enseñar la lección.  La lección es, necesariamente, la misma para todos los estudiantes de la clase.  Tanto los más “avanzados” como los más “atrasados” reciben el mismo contenido y se espera que todos aprendan lo mismo.  La tarea queda para la casa donde el estudiante tiene que trabajar sin un maestro para guiarlos.

For some time I believe that many of our educational leaders have promoted reforms in our educational systems thinking in a logic of “enhancements” to a system designed centuries ago, without asking whether it remains an appropriate response to the needs of the 21st century.

Hace tiempo que creo que muchos de nuestros líderes educativos han impulsado reformas en nuestros sistemas educativos pensando en una lógica de “mejoras” a un sistema diseñado hace siglos, sin preguntarse si éste sigue siendo una respuesta adecuada a las necesidades del siglo XXI.

Despite what we have been told, money doesn’t seem to be sufficient to explain happiness, or at least not fully. According to data from Gallup’s Global Wellbeing report, countries are classified according to their wellbeing, defined as what their citizens think about their present and future lives. That is, their satisfaction and expectations.

A pesar de lo que nos han dicho, la plata no parece suficiente para explicar la felicidad, o al menos, no basta. Los datos de las Encuestas de Bienestar Global aplicadas por Gallup, permiten clasificar a los países según su prosperidad, definida como la opinión que tienen los habitantes sobre su vida presente y futura, o sea, su satisfacción y expectativas.

We don’t have to be experts to recognize that the major factor in getting a good education is a good teacher. Think about your own experiences at school, and surely you can easily identify the teachers who made a big difference in your lives. In my opinion, the Latin American countries have many good teachers, from whom we can learn best practices and therefore replicate their results.

No necesitamos ser expertos para identificar que el principal factor para conseguir una buena educación es un buen maestro. Piensen en sus propias experiencias en la escuela y seguro que podrán identificar fácilmente a los maestros que hicieron una gran diferencia en sus vidas.

En mi opinión, en nuestros países tenemos muchos profesores que son muy buenos, de los cuales podemos aprender sus mejores prácticas, y por lo tanto, replicar sus buenos resultados.
